American Hustle: Jennifer Lawrence & Amy Adams Kiss & Tell!

Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams lock lips in the upcoming “American Hustle,” but according to the actresses, the kiss wasn’t sexy – it was toxic!

Access Hollywood caught up with Jennifer and Amy at the junket for their new David O. Russell-directed film, where they explained how their big screen lip lock came to be.

“That was her idea,” Jennifer said of Amy’s idea for the kiss, which was not in the script.

“[The director] brought it up to me and was like, ‘Amy thinks that you should kiss her in a scene,’ and I was like, ‘What? Why?’ I didn’t understand it,” Jennifer explained. “Then when we started the scene… it completely made sense. [My character] has a toxic need to be in control and to overpower a situation… I did not think it made sense before David called action and then as soon as we were in the scene, it happened organically because it was just so true.”

But, Jennifer did not lay down a sexy kiss on Amy that most people would enjoy.

“Of course, [my character] was not gonna slap her,” the Oscar winner said. “Anybody can slap her, anybody can just storm out, but I am going to horrify her and scare her and alpha her [and] cover her in lip gloss.”

Amy told Access the motivation for the kiss was about dominance in the scene.

“It’s sort of like a confessional and a power struggle and [our characters] are both so desperate and so angry… and I said, ‘Well, what if [my character] kisses her because that’s the ultimate chess move,’” Amy said, explaining that her character gets a lot more than she expected from Jennifer’s character,

“She killed it,” Amy said of Jennifer. “It didn’t feel sexy, it felt toxic… I did not kiss her back. There’s no like participatory element to it at all there.”

“American Hustle,” also starring Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale, opens in theaters on December 13, 2013.
