Amy Schumer On Finding Confidence Through Fashion; Her Debut HBO Comedy Special

Amy Schumer’s first ever HBO comedy special premieres on the cabler this Saturday night and she hopes it has a positive effect on viewers.

“The special’s me saying, ‘OK, I just got kind of thrust into Hollywood and this was my experience of it,'” Amy told Maria Shriver, who interviewed her for “Today.” “And a lot of it is about self-esteem. I feel like I kind of went underground, like I was doing a story on Hollywood. And I’m coming out like, ‘OK, here’s what’s going on: no one’s just naturally thin, everyone’s starving,’ and telling all the things I found out in a way that hopefully will make everybody laugh and feel better, which is my goal across the board with everything.”

Beyond entertaining, the “Trainwreck” star is working to help other women with her style fund organization. According to “Today,” Amy co-hosted a style empowerment workshop, with Goodwill Industries of Southern California, hoping to help women, by inspiring them through fashion.

“It’s been a struggle for me my whole life and especially just being in the entertainment industry. Standing on a stage in front of people, I can’t perform my best or be confident if I’m not sure — if I’m pulling at something. And sometimes I would just want to throw in the towel and be like, ‘I’m not gonna go do stand-up tonight,'” Amy said.
The actress and funny lady told Maria that she found more confidence after working with her “Trainwreck” stylist, Leesa Evans.

“Leesa had given me this gift of showing me how to dress and feel good, and she didn’t have to do this, but she just did. She shopped for my sister also and seeing my little sister wearing a little blazer, and a shirt and looking just like a strong, beautiful woman, I realized that holding myself back was also holding her back,” Amy said, tearing up. “And so, to see just the person I care the most about being given those tools was really moving for me and I just wanted to give it to every woman.”

“Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo” premieres Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10 PM ET/PT on HBO.
