‘Betty’, ‘Borat’, & Brad Make TIME’s ‘Most Influential’

TIME magazine lists its 100 Most Influential People In the World in this week’s issue, and a host of celebrities have made the cut.

The 4th annual TIME 100 list recognizes “the men and women whose power, talent or moral example is transforming our world.”

Artists & entertainers are granted their own section on the list, with the four other categories being “Leaders & Revolutionaries”, “Builders & Titans”, “Scientists & Thinkers”, and “Heroes & Pioneers”.

Rosie O’Donnell, Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake and “Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes are among those honored on the list.

Barbara Walters writes about O’Donnell in the issue, saying, “And so, last September, we began a thrilling roller-coaster ride. We followed Rosie’s passion and compassion, her feuds and fearlessness, her humanity and humor. When Rosie and ABC couldn’t come to an agreement for her to return to the program next fall, it was for me a plunge on the roller coaster. But we remain respectful and affectionate friends.”

Other notable tributes include:

– Roseanne on “Borat” star Sacha Baron Cohen: “He does offend some people’s sensibilities, but the youth of today are offended if they’re not offended. If you want to be the kind of comic who changes minds about issues like prejudice, you must cross the line occasionally or you’re not going far enough.”

– Martin Scorsese on Leonardo DiCaprio: “He holds the screen, like a great silent actor. With his face, his eyes. He knows how to use them and how to use his body; he has an innate sense of how much to give and how much to hold back. I look at him, and I know he’s a true actor. The camera knows it. And most important, the audience knows it.”

– David Beckham on “American Idol” creator Simon Fuller: “I have many reasons to be thankful to Simon Fuller but one in particular springs to mind. He provided me with an introduction to a young lady called Victoria Adams, who went on to become Mrs. Beckham.”

Some celebrities, such as George Clooney, Michael J. Fox, Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks, are honored in the “Heroes & Pioneers” section rather than in “Artists & Entertainers.”

Angelina Jolie is included in a first-time bonus category called “Power Givers,” which honors “influentials with a mind for philanthropy and thoughtful activism.”

Stephen Colbert and Korean pop star Rain, who are not on the TIME 100 list, tied for the highest rating on TIME.com’s TIME 100 reader poll. More than 2.5 million votes were cast.
