Caitriona Balfe On ‘Outlander’ Season 2

“Outlander” is five episodes into filming Season 2, and Caitriona Balfe said she’s been enjoying the new material for her character, Claire Fraser, who is pregnant.

“It’s going really good,” Caitriona told Access Hollywood at Comic-Con earlier this month before returning to the show’s set in Scotland. “It’s a very visually – a very different show this year. I mean, obviously Claire and Jamie are sort of center and all that still. But yeah, it’s really beautiful. The sets are fantastic — so rich and so lush and the costumes are incredible, but you know what I’ve been really enjoying is that Claire’s pregnant and playing all of that – what that brings up in her and about impending motherhood and everything. It’s just been a really, really fun, great material to work with.”

Claire thought she couldn’t get pregnant, and now that she is, it affects the character quite deeply.

“It changes everything,” Caitriona told Access. “When you kind of believe that something is impossible and then that changes… it brings up a lot of stuff about her own family and her past. She lost her parents when she was 5, so she’s never really had that kind of mother figure there to guide her, and I think it brings up a lot of that stuff for her, but it’s something that brings Jamie and Claire really together, and it’s a beautiful part of the story.”

While the majority of the “Outlander” storyline will take place in the past, there will be some of Frank (Tobias Menzies), who was last seen in flashback in the piece, in Season 2.

“We did some stuff back in the ’40s and it’s beautiful. Ron [D. Moore] wrote that stuff, and yeah, I think Tobias and I just really — I don’t think either of us felt that we’d had such great material,” Caitriona said. “It’s just fantastic. It’s fantastic stuff to play.”

“Outlander” will return to Starz for a 13-episode Season 2 in 2016.
