Derek Hough Taking Break From ‘Dancing With The Stars’; Starring In ‘Cobu 3-D’

Following in the fancy footwork of sister Julianne, professional dancer Derek Hough is temporarily leaving “Dancing with the Stars” for the big screen, Access Hollywood has confirmed.

According to Deadline, which first broke the news, Derek, who has helped three stars take home the mirrorball trophy on ABC series (Nicole Scherzinger, Brooke Burke and Jennifer Grey), will miss season 12 of the hit reality competition to star in “Cobu 3-D.”

The movie will also reportedly star Asian singing sensation BoA.

Duane Adler, who penned “Save the Last Dance” and “Step Up,” is slated to direct the story about two dancers embroiled in a “Romeo & Juliet”-esque romance set in a world of two rival dance clubs.

“Dancing” executive producer Conrad Green told Access they expect Derek to return to the ballroom later this year.

“We wish Derek the best as he takes time off from ‘Dancing with the Stars’ to pursue his film career and look forward to having him return to the show in the Fall,” Conrad said in a statement to Access.

“Cobu 3-D” is slated to start shooting this spring in Toronto and New York.
