Dish Of Salt: Wednesday TV Dish (Dishing on CBS’s New Fall Shows)

CBS shook things up this week at Upfronts by cancelling a slew of shows including “Ghost Whisperer,” “New Adventures of Old Christine,” “Cold Case” and “Numb3rs.” They also caused a stir by moving ratings hit (and fan favorite) “The Big Bang Theory” to Thursday nights, hoping to set up a second night of sitcom gold. Plus, they are moving Thursday night staple, “Survivor,” to Wednesday nights. So, there is a lot of pressure riding on their new Fall shows. Do they make the mark? I take a look in today’s Dish.

“Hawaii Five-0” – This will be Alex O’Laughlin’s third attempt at a successful show for CBS after both “Three Rivers” and “Moonlight” were cancelled. Personally, I don’t get why this guy can’t sell a show. He’s hot! I am not a fan of cop shows or of TV show remakes, but I have to admit hearing that infamous theme song (brought back to life) kind of got my juices flowing while watching the preview clips. Plus you’ve got Daniel Dae Kim coming off an amazing run on “Lost” and the gorgeous Grace Park, who is surely going to bring in her “Battlestar Galactica” fan boys along with all those bikini shots. This could be a hit. (In related news, The CW will screen Season 1 of “Moonlight” after repeats of the “Vampire Diaries” this summer.)

“The Defenders” — Yet another legal show, this one is a dramedy starring Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell as Las Vegas attorneys. You know how I feel about more unnecessary legal shows, but listen, people watched Jim Belushi for eight seasons on “According to Jim,” the sitcom that would just never end. So who knows? He might have some kind of magic TV powers he sends through the TV set. I’m guessing this isn’t a remake of the 1960’s version of “The Defenders” on CBS, which starred EG Marshall and Robert Reed as father-son lawyers. Well, unless Jim and Jerry turn out to be related.

“Blue Bloods” — A drama starring Tom Selleck as the head of a family of Irish cops. Donnie Wahlberg and “Sex and The City’s’” Bridget Moynahan play his kids, although Bridget clearly went against the family and works as an assistant DA. I guess it was better to see her in suits than a cop uniform. More cops on TV. Snooze.

“Mike & Molly” — A sitcom about an overweight couple who find love at an overeaters anonymous meeting. The clips were not that funny, but I like the concept of the show and it’s from “Two and A Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory” creator Chuck Lorre, so I’m gonna give it some time to get funny.

”$#*! My Dad Says” — A sitcom born out of a Twitter feed (no, I’m not kidding), where the son writes about all the bizarre things his dad says and does. I’m going to throw it out there right now that this show is going to be a sure fire hit. Why? Two words — William Shatner. Reason No. 1 — the show is on after “The Big Bang Theory” — a show watched by and that celebrates all things fan boy. Who is bigger in fan boy world than The Shat?! Reason No. 2 — The Shat! He’s the best at curmudgeonly roles. Think Denny on “Boston Legal” but in a sitcom and without a job.
