Elizabeth Banks Welcomes First Baby Via Surrogate

“30 Rock” star Elizabeth Banks is a new mom!

In a case of life imitating art, the actress – whose character on the hit NBC sitcom recently gave birth to her first child – has also welcomed her first child in real-life, via a gestational surrogate, she revealed on her personal blog on Wednesday.

“I have been very fortunate in life both professionally and personally. I have had untold number of opportunities to work with inspiring people, on great projects as an actress, and I have had a fantastic long term relationship of nearly 20 years with my now husband, Max,” she wrote on the site.

“The one true hurdle I’ve faced in life is that I have a broken belly. After years of trying to get pregnant, exploring the range of fertility treatments, all unsuccessful, our journey led us to gestational surrogacy: we make a ‘baby cake’ and bake it in another woman’s ‘oven,’” she continued.

And now, her surrogate has given birth to the couple’s first child – a son, whom Elizabeth and Max named Felix.

“From that came two miracles. The first was meeting our carrier and her husband who were truly humbling in their decency and generosity. And the second miracle was the birth of our baby boy, Felix Handelman. Felix means ‘happy’ and ‘lucky’ in Latin. And true to his name, Felix is a very happy baby and a blessing on our life,” the 37-year-old actress wrote. “We have maintained a great deal of privacy throughout this process, and hope to continue to honor Felix’s privacy going forward.”

She also posted a message on her Twitter page on Wednesday, again confirming the news.

“What’s greater than overjoyed? Megajoyed? Add humility, love, awe. Sprinkle w cute. Result: my new life as a mom. It’s a boy!” she Tweeted.

Elizabeth’s “30 Rock” character – go-get-‘em TV news personality Avery Jessup – recently gave birth to a baby girl, whom she welcomed with Alec Baldwin’s character, Jack Donaghy.

She and her real-life husband Max – who were college sweethearts – wed in 2003.
