‘Game Of Thrones’ Begins Filming Season 2, Will Break For Emmys

“Game of Thrones” has returned to Westeros. Filming for Season 2 began earlier this week, but the producers assured Access Hollywood they will be at the Emmys come September 18.

“We’ve never ever been, so we’ve gotta go,” David Benioff, who produces the show for HBO alongside D.B. Weiss told Access Hollywood at Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego late last week.

The two men who brought author George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series to life on the small screen admitted they were in shock when the Emmy nominations were handed down, of which their show received 13 nods including ones for Casting, Costume, Directing and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister.

“We were in Belfast. [D.B.] was looking at his computer and he said, ‘We won.’ And I said, ‘What did we win?’ and he said, ‘No, we got nominated for an Emmy.’ I didn’t believe him,” David recounted. “I forced him to show me where it said on the computer that we were nominated.”

George too is looking forward to attending the event, although he told Access he’s been before.

“I’ve lost twice,” he laughed.

In the run up to the Emmys, the producers and stars of the show will be filming in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Iceland, and D.B. said the second season will bring the drama.

“There will be blood,” D.B. told Access.

Fans of the books will remember that a scene in Season 1 – featuring Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley) confronting prisoner Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) about Bran’s fall, actually occurs in George’s second book. David said the moving around of chapters in the actual television version will happen some more.

“A few things from book 3 will be in [Season] 2 actually,” David told Access.

“It’s a lot of journeys,” he added of storylines set to lead the drama when it returns to HBO next year. “Jon Snow is wandering north of the wall with the Night’s Watch to find out what’s going on up there, and Theon Greyjoy is traveling to his ancestral homeland.”

“We do introduce Stannis [Baratheon], the missing brother, who was often referred to, but never seen in the first season,” George chimed in, referring to a major part, which will be played by British actor Stephen Dillane.

David also confirmed reports that producers are working on changing the name of Theon Greyjoy’s sister, who in the books is called Asha.

“We’re a little bit worried about the Osha/Asha sounding too close together,” David said, making a reference to the Season 1 wildling character. “So it might be a slightly different name.”
