George R.R. Martin Blogs Following ‘Game Of Thrones’ Sansa Plot Twist

George R.R. Martin was asked for his opinion on Sunday night’s “Game of Thrones,” and he turned to a familiar response.

“How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have? Three, in the novel. One, in the movie. None, in real life: she was a fictional character, she never existed. The show is the show, the books are the books; two different tellings of the same story,” he wrote on his Not A Blog site on Monday.

Martin didn’t mention the exact question fans were asking him, but no doubt it was over the ending sequence involving Ramsay Bolton’s wedding night rape of Sansa Stark, which didn’t happen in his novels. In GRRM’s works, Ramsay married a character named Jeyne Poole (who was in disguise as a Stark) and who was brutalized by the Bolton. Meanwhile, Sansa was far away.

The author reminded fans of something he’s said before — small changes turn into bigger ones (he mentioned the butterfly effect in his post).

“There has seldom been any TV series as faithful to its source material, by and large (if you doubt that, talk to the Harry Dresden fans, or readers of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, or the fans of the original WALKING DEAD comic books)… but the longer the show goes on, the bigger the butterflies become. And now we have reached the point where the beat of butterfly wings is stirring up storms, like the one presently engulfing my email,” he wrote.

Before wrapping up his blog, Martin stood up for his fellow “GoT” producers.

“David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] and Bryan [Cogman] and HBO are trying to make the best television series that they can,” he wrote. “And over here I am trying to write the best novels that I can.

“And yes, more and more, they differ. Two roads diverging in the dark of the woods, I suppose,” he continued. “but all of us are still intending that at the end we will arrive at the same place.”
