My sister, who has a one month old, asked me the other day where she could get a charm necklace with her baby’s initial on it. Funny — I had just gone through my own charm necklace search to honor my 3-year-old daughter.
It wasn’t as easy as I thought. I bought a necklace and a small pave letter “H” from one of my favorites- Jennifer Fisher, a jewelry designer known for her wide range of charms. It can be challenging to buy online though! The chain I picked was larger than I thought it would be and people have asked me if the “H” is a pi sign, so I guess it’s hard to read because it’s so small. (Hey, it was all I could afford!) It’s also too dainty for the chain I chose.
I ended up going to Helen Ficalora in Beverly Hills and buying an “H” disc charm, which I added to the necklace and now I love it. The bigger circle charm added some heft and weight to the necklace and now the little pave “H” is a nice addition. It was so much easier to actually go into a store and try things on, but I know that’s not always the case.
I would suggest you do as much research as you can and ask for extra photos — which is something I should have done. Also try to buy from companies that will accept returns, although most personalized items are not returnable.
Charms are a good gift for any mom or grandmother, whether it’s Mother’s Day or not. Here are a few good ones to check out.
THE CELEB PICK: JENNIFER MEYER
Katie Holmes has a pave “S” charm necklace for her daughter Suri. The circle pendant necklace comes in either white or 14 carat yellow gold on a delicate chain. Gorgeous, but at $1800, it’s got the celeb price tag to match. The jeweler (who counts Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox as friends and fans of her line) also offers initial pendent necklaces for $1125. Available at www.barneys.com
FOR THE HIP MOM: JENNIFER FISHER
Sarah Jessica Parker, Lauren Conrad, Naomi Watts and Uma Thurman are fans of this line, which is also on the pricy side. In addition to pretty much any charm you could imagine (sculls, spiders, snakes, stars, butterflies), there are many options for personalized charms. There’s a dog tag, bar tag, circle discs, moons, stars, shields, puzzle pieces and initials that can all be personalized with the name or initials of your loved ones. For more info, check out www.jenniferfisherjewelry.com
FOR THE CLASSIC MOM: HELEN FICALORA
Helen’s elegant jewelry is made for moms…or anyone who wants to wear their loved one’s initial whether it be their mom or dad, child, husband, boyfriend or partner. In addition to Helen’s wildly popular alphabet charms ($155), there are also “MOM,” “NANA,” “LOVE” and “XOX” charms. www.helenfacalora.com
FOR THE GLAM MOM: MAX AND CHLOE
One of my ultra-stylish mommy friends always wears her signature necklace with the initials of her twins in a fancy script monogram and she makes it look so glamorous! Max and Chloe features hundreds of personalized jewelry items in all price ranges, including monogram earrings, bracelets and signet rings.
