Glam Slam: Makeup Mondays — 2011 Trends

What makeup trends will you be wearing this year?

Lancome’s video makeup artist Michelle Phan, who with over a million subscribers, is YouTube’s most popular “guru” thanks to her makeup tutorials, shares the three big trends to look for in 2011.

MATTE LIPSTICK
Bright lipstick (like Kate Bosworth’s) is having a moment and there’s no better way to get the look than with matte lipstick. Matte pigments really provide the saturated color you want. In the past, matte lipstick was really drying, but the new matte technology makes it much gentler on the lips. I love Lancôme Color Design matte lipstick, especially the Posh Pink shade.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK:
Matte lipstick is easy. You just want to make sure your lips are smooth and hydrated. Matte lipstick does not look good over dry, flaky lips. If that’s a problem for you, take a glob of lip balm, rub into your lips, then take a washcloth, saturate it with warm water, wring it out and rub it gently over your lips. Make sure to drink enough water during the day when you’re wearing matte lipstick. If you’re dehydrated, the first place it shows up will be on your lips. As for applying the matte lipstick, it’s super easy. Apply straight from the tube. The color is generally so saturated, you don’t need lip liner. You can apply with your finger for a “stained” look.

THE COLOR PURPLE
If you buy one thing to update your makeup this Spring, buy something purple. A grape nail polish, a plum eyeliner, lavender eyeshadow (like Rihanna’s). You can be as dramatic or as subtle as you want with purple.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK:
How you wear purple is totally up to you. Purple tends to look beautiful on all skin tones. It’s just a matter of knowing whether cool or warm colors look better on you. Plum and burgundy are warm colors, lavender and grape are cool. My advice is not to go overboard with purple. You don’t need purple blush, lip-gloss and eyeshadow. A touch of it here and there goes a long way. But make sure you pick a purple that shows up on your skin. The darker your skin tone, the brighter and/or bolder you’ll want the color to be.

DISCO MAKEUP
This is all about having fun with your eyes and lips. You can play with bright colors and textures and try things you wouldn’t wear during the day, like glitter. (Check out Katy Perry.)

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK:
When it comes to disco, there are no rules. A common beauty rule is to focus on eyes OR lips. Here, you can play up both. Glossy bright pink lips with smokey black and gray eyeshadow and a bit of glitter around the tear duct. Or shimmery blue eyeshadow with a glossy coral lips.
