When the fashion on the Oscars red carpet was good, it was very, very good. And there was A LOT of beautiful fashion. But there were a few ensembles that left me scratching my head. Huh? Like what was with all the over-the-top ruffles?
There were several other major trends. Metallics rocked. Pale colors ruled. Blue was big. Strapless was the way to go.
Maria Menounos and I had a blast covering the fashion again this year and in the spirit of the Olympics, we handed out our own GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE medals. And for those who weren’t so great, well they got a big DQ- DISQUALIFIED!
THE GOLD
OK, we cheated a bit. We didn’t just give out one gold medal… but there were so many gorgeous gowns, it was too hard to narrow it down to just one. Thank goodness we’re not real judges!
Boy, does Jennifer Lopez know how to work a gown. She knows how to work a red carpet too. Or should I say dominate a red carpet. She literally had the whole carpet backed up worse than five o’clock traffic on the 101, as she posed for photos. The photographers were going CRAZY for her. Her strapless pale pink Armani Prive gown from the Spring/Summer 2010 was simply stunning. It showed off her curves and her butt looked amazing in it. There, I said it.
Can you imagine the enormous pressure Sarah Jessica Parker must feel every time she hits the red carpet? We all have such extremely high expectations for her. No worries! Fashion Risk Taker Sarah Jessica Parker struck gold again with her pale yellow Chanel Haute Couture gown. Carrie Bradshaw would love it!!! The dramatic and unusual silver embroidered neckline was gorgeous.
Sandra Bullock was radiant in a beautiful gold beaded Marchesa, which looked elegant and ladylike. She bucked doing a traditional up-do and wore her hair sleek and straight. She finished the look with bright pink lips.
The ‘Precious’ ladies were beautiful in blue. Gabourey Sidibe wore a sapphire embellished silk Marchesa while Mo’Nique wore a Tadashi Shoji ruched silk jersey gown in electric blue. But I most liked the flowers in Mo’Nique’s hair, which was a tribute to the first African American to win an Oscar, Hattie McDaniel, who wore flowers in her hair the night she won in 1940. Nice and fitting tribute.
Miley Cyrus was sophisticated in her Jenny Packham custom champagne colored silk and tulle strapless gown. It featured a pretty bustier and lots of hand beading and sequins. The girl is growing up! Kate Winslet also looked lovely in champagne… hers a strapless YSL, which she complimented with retro chic Veronica Lake waves.
THE SILVER
Carey Mulligan wore perhaps the most unique dress I have ever seen! Her black strapless Prada featured miniature items like forks, knives, spoons and scissors sewn into the gown. It was fun and playful and seemed tailor made for her personality and adorable pixie cut. I admire her for taking a chance and not playing it safe. Hey- can you pass me the silverware? Meryl Streep looked the sexiest I have ever seen her in a sleek white gown by ‘Project Runway’s’ Chris March that was quite low cut for Meryl! I can only hope I look half as good as she does at 60!
THE BRONZE
Cameron Diaz sparkled in her Oscar De La Renta embellished gown. Nicole Richie also sparkled in her silvery backless, beaded Reem Acra gown. It had long sleeves, which you rarely see at the Oscars and had a ‘60s vintage feel. Pure Nicole. Nominee Anna Kendrick nailed it with her pale pink Elie Saab.
DISQUALIFIED
‘Avatar’ star Zoe Saldana is so beautiful. Her purple Givenchy Haute Couture gown, not so much. This gown had a split personality – it didn’t know what it wanted to be. The top was sparkly rhinestones. The bottom was a mess of ruffles, which overwhelmed her. Overall, it was just too, too much.
Nominee Vera Farmiga also went with ruffles… her bright red Marchesa overpowered her petite frame. I saw the dress, not the woman, which is a shame because she is so pretty.
It’s tricky to pull off a print on the red carpet, which was proven by two stars. I was not a fan of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s bold bright print Dries Van Noten column gown. Rachel McAdams print gown fared a little better, but was blah.
Oh, Charlize. I always think she looks so amazing, but unfortunately, not this year. Her pale purple Dior with rosettes on the bust was just that… a total bust. Even the best have an off day. Too bad it was the Oscars where millions are watching.
OSCAR STYLE SQUAD
It was so fun to cover fashion again for Access Hollywood. A big shout out to the Access Hollywood Style Squad (Nicole, Michelle, Brooke, Makeup Artist Karen and Hairstylist Ursula) who got me ready for the big day. The cobalt blue dress with jewel accented neckline I wore is by Lebanese designer Ronald. I paired it with a vintage crystal Judith Leiber clutch by Avelle. My shoes were the sickest silver metallic platforms by Stuart Weitzman. They were so high and I though I would never be able to walk in them, but they were actually comfortable! Le Vian diamond earrings and an Amrapali for D’Orazio & Associates diamond bracelet finished the look. Thanks to everyone!
