The secret existence of mythical creatures living amongst humans has been delightfully revealed on NBC’s “Grimm,” and audiences keep coming back to watch Det. Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) find his footing as a newly-anointed peacekeeper between the Wesen world and mankind.
As the show nears its first season finale (May 18), the fate of several key characters remains shrouded in mystery as the fantasy series gears up for Season 2.
AccessHollywood.com wanted to get the second season scoop straight from the horse’s – well, wolf’s — mouth, so we brought in fan favorite Silas Weir Mitchell (Monroe) to answer fan questions about his character’s relationship with Det. Nick Burkhardt/Grimm (David Giuntoli), the life of a reformed Blutbad and Monroe’s possible romance with series newcomer Rosalee Calvert (Bree Turner).
AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman: First off, what does a Grimm look like to a Blutbad?
Silas: He looks like a guy. He just looks like a guy, but you know he’s a Grimm because you can tell that he – that’s a really good question! It’s just an intuitive thing. You know when someone sees you and you’ve morphed, you know that you’re made. It’s just kind of a look in the eyes. They don’t change to you.
Laura: So [Grimms] don’t look like anything? They don’t morph?
Silas: No, they don’t morph as well. You can read that they’ve read you, you know what I mean? You just know.
Laura: Rosalee… [Monroe’s] got no game, but obviously he’s got a massive crush on her.
Silas: Yeah, she’s a sweetheart and she’s someone that understands the world. A female fox is a vixen, actually, so, yeah, she’s very attractive. But I have to tiptoe, you know? Look what happened with Angelina, man! When I was hanging out with Angelina, as I said on the show, I would wake up picking rabbit hair out of my teeth. I can’t get back into that because stuff gets released when you get into that realm.
Laura: Hypothetically speaking, if you and Rosalee got together, you’re a Blutbad, she’s not. What would their children be? A hybrid?
Silas: (Laughs.) I guess so, yeah. I haven’t gotten into like the husbandry – the creature husbandry.
Laura: Does Nick have any supernatural powers? Is he stronger, more powerful, faster, because he’s a Grimm?
Silas: I don’t think it’s supernatural. I think the idea behind the show is always to maintain the reality and the integrity of the world we live in as much as possible. I know there are fantastic elements, but it’s still this world. But I do think, within that realm, he’s very gifted. He’s just gifted at fighting these guys. It’s in his blood. He might not know it, but I think it starts to kind of unveil itself.
Laura: Are we going to learn more about Monroe’s history and why he left his wild ways behind?
Silas: That’s a really good question! That’s a question that I have and I don’t know. I really don’t know what’s coming in the second season because you shoot 22 [episodes], you kind of put your head down and you just go. You ask questions about the scripts that are present that you’re reading and you don’t want to get too far ahead of yourself because you start getting sidetracked from what’s happening in the moment. I really don’t know what’s coming in the second season. The one thing I have been told… is that it’s going to broaden out into the world a little bit, as far as like, global stuff… Because of the German element to it, the fairy tales, there’s gonna be sort of an international quality to what’s going on.
Laura: Monroe got a warning beatdown for working with Nick – will there be more trouble in the future?
Silas: I can’t imagine there won’t be. I can’t imagine there won’t be – as far as the bad guys are concerned, it’s an unholy alliance that should not be happening.
Laura: Is Monroe’s strong sense of smell an unfortunate distraction at his Pilates class?
Silas: It can be! It can be very distracting at restaurants – people with too much perfume, yeah. I actually, myself, have a very strong sense of smell. I can relate – it’s a blessing and a curse.
