Gwendoline Christie On Joining ‘Star Wars VII’ Cast; Talks ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 5

“Game of Thrones” star Gwendoline Christie recently joined the cast of the “Star Wars VII,” and she reacted to getting the gig like a true fan of the beloved franchise.

“That was a real, real dream come true,” Gwendoline told Access Hollywood ahead of the “Game of Thrones” signing at the Warner Bros. booth at Comic-Con.

“That was like nothing you ever imagined,” she continued. “It’s so burnt into our minds. It’s burnt into my mind. I was shown those movies when I was a tiny little girl and then, to be a part of that thing that you held in such high regard, that’s been your escapism and your love and your entertainment and it’s been not just yours but everyone around you, I’m incredibly lucky. And it’s a lot of fun.”

As one would expect, the English actress’ role in “Star Wars VII” is a closely guarded secret, and it appears what will happen next for Brienne of Tarth on “Thrones” is as well, as Gwendoline gave Access just a teeny tease for what’s next.

“Brienne of Tarth may well continue to kick ass,” she laughed.

At Comic-Con, Gwendoline joined her “GoT” co-stars, including Maisie Williams (Arya), Sophie Turner (Sansa), Pedro Pascal (the late Oberyn), Kit Harington (Jon), John Bradley (Samwell), Rose Leslie (Ygritte, R.I.P.), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime) and her Season 4 finale sparring partner, Rory McCann (The Hound/Sandor Clegane). Reflecting on that big battle between The Hound and Brienne, Gwendoline gave credit to the people behind the scenes for making it come across so impressively.

“It was so intense. We had worked really, really hard. HBO, yet again, have been brilliant facilitating that, C.C. Smiff [was] brilliant helping to create that fight. Rory was really magnificent and I’m really proud. [Director] Alex Graves did a sensational job, David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss, the show’s executive producers] — it’s all of these people together and you know what? It’s all of costume and all of the makeup girls that are there holding my hand and like mopping my brow and getting us ready time and time again and holding up umbrellas and you’re the lucky one that gets to do it while all these people are holding it together and making it for you,” she said.

And with the show’s recent Emmy nomination for Best Drama, Gwendoline would love to see Team “GoT” take home the prize.

“That’s great and David and Dan deserve it,” she said, reacting to the show’s Best Drama nom. “I really do think that. I know it’s the same in the whole of the film and television industry, but this show — it’s so complex, it’s so vast and everybody on it is working so, so hard and I always think, I work hard, but there are people that are there, day in, day out and they’re the glue that hold the whole thing together. And for everybody involved, and what they’ve done over the last four years, going into five years, I would really like to see that rewarded with a nice big prize.”
