Gwyneth Joins Jay-Z Onstage For Birthday Surprise

LONDON (September 29, 2006) — When Gwyneth Paltrow revealed to Access Hollywood she was planning to celebrate her birthday by going to see Jay-Z perform at London’s Royal Albert Hall, she didn’t mention she would also be part of the concert.

Paltrow made a surprise appearance with the hip-hop star on Wednesday night, according to the BBC’s Web site.

The Oscar winner took the stage to sing the chorus of Jay-Z’s “Song Cry” off of the “Blueprint” album.

“She was a bit nervous but her performance was really excellent,” a concertgoer told the BBC.

Other onstage guests included Paltrow’s husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, as well as Jay-Z’s girlfriend Beyonce and rap star Nas, according to reports.

Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, was also backed by a 25-piece orchestra and a DJ for his set.

The concert marked the first hip-hop gig to take place in the legendary Royal Albert Hall.

Martin sang with Jay-Z on an untitled song from the rapper’s new album, and added vocals to another track from “Blueprint,” called “Heart Of The City (Ain’t No Love).”The Coldplay star’s performance had been rumored before the concert, but his wife’s appearance was more of a surprise.

“People were like: ‘Who is this chick that’s in the spotlight?’” another concertgoer said. “Then Jay-Z said: ‘I want people to wish a happy birthday to my good friend Gwyneth Paltrow’. Everyone was like: ‘Are you for real?’”

In an interview with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush earlier this month, Paltrow revealed her birthday plans.

“How are you celebrating your birthday?” asked Billy.

“Actually, I’m going to go to the Royal Albert Hall in London to see Jay-Z. It’s the first ever hip-hop concert in the Royal Albert Hall,” Gwyneth said.

“When you said the Royal Albert Hall, I’m thinking Tchaikovsky must be back,” Billy joked.

“Nope, it’s Jay-Z,” she smiled.

“Are you a rap fan or do you know him?” Billy asked.

“I’m a Jay-Z fan. He’s my best friend,” she smiled.
