Jason Momoa has already made an impression as Khal Drogo, a savage warrior king in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” and he’s about to get even fiercer when he takes on the iconic role of “Conan The Barbarian” in the remake, which hits theaters on August 19.
“It’s a dream come true,” Jason told Access Hollywood at Cinemacon in Las Vegas earlier this year of his movie role. “I’ve been doing this for 12 years; I always wanted to be on the big screen. It’s a hard road; it’s some big shoes to fill, but I knew I could do it. It’s fantastic.”
The hardest part of the job for the well-built actor was the scenes where Conan is atop a horse.
“I hate horses,” the star told Access. “Me and that horse didn’t get along very well. He broke a couple of my ribs.”
Jason credits his work on “Game of Thrones” with helping him net the lead role in the remake of the 1983 film, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“I went out on an audition to do ‘Game of Thrones’… and that the same casting director was [working on] ‘Conan,’” Jason explained.
Jason, who hails from Hawaii, said he actually did a native dance from The Islands, to help win over the rest of the casting panel.
“It’s like a war dance that you go into battle with and so I did it,” he said of breaking into the fierce number. “It’s very scary.”
Luckily for Jason, the bold move “worked out.”
While the new “Conan” won’t be out for a few more months, Jason, who has two children with former “Cosby Show” actress Lisa Bonet, is already thinking about the sequel.
One thing he’d like to see considered for the plot involves taking on the beast that injured him during the filming of the first film.
”[With] ‘Conan 2,’ I’m gonna start with me eating that horse,” he laughed.
