Jennifer Lawrence: '‘Hunger Games’ Is Not ‘Twilight’’

The upcoming film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopia novels, “The Hunger Games,” might have a hardcore fan base and a female lead caught between two men, but star Jennifer Lawrence says her upcoming project is not “The Twilight Saga,” at least not yet.

”‘Hunger Games’ is not ‘Twilight’, and while I hear the comparisons, it’s really premature to say that it will be the same phenomenon,” the actress told Vanity Fair’s December issue.

“I’m so proud of the work we did on the film – [director Gary Ross] and the entire cast and crew were amazing, and I can’t wait for it to be brought to life because I think it’s an important story,” she continued. “If it does become a crazy phenomenon, I’ll soak up my freedom now!”

As for her beloved Katniss character – who endures countless attempts on her life while fighting to survive in the games and is forced to kill others – Jennifer hinted that she’s portraying her as someone who takes zero pleasure in taking someone’s life.

“These kids are killing one another only because if they don’t, they’ll die. It’s needless, pointless, unjustified violence. It’s heartbreaking,” she explained. “When I auditioned, I told Gary, ‘I understand if you don’t hire me, but please remember that after Katniss shoots a bow and kills someone, her face cannot be bada**.’”

Adding, “So, there’s nothing cool about her. It’s not like she looks around the arena and goes, ‘Yeah, I got this.’ I think she looks around helplessly, and thinks, I made a promise to my sister that I would survive; now I have to kill in order to do so.”

“The Hunger Games,” which also features Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson and Lenny Kravitz, is slated to hit theaters on March 23, 2012.
