Jennifer Love Hewitt Talks Finding Romance With Jamie Kennedy

Jennifer Love Hewitt has opened up about her relationship with beau Jamie Kennedy, admitting he is the first friend she has ever dated.

“We’ve been friends for a long time,” Jennifer said of her “Ghost Whisperer” co-star in an episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which airs on Wednesday. “I’ve heard about it — about being friends with somebody and it turns into something else and I’ve never really done that before and it’s been great. He’s hilarious and when you’re with somebody funny they’re always funny and it’s just great.”

Though the two were friends while she was engaged to Scottish actor Ross McAll (the two split in January), Jennifer said romance didn’t enter her mind until after the break-up.

“You’ve been friends with him and you never, in the back of your mind though, ‘Hey, I’m attracted to him?” Ellen asked.

“I was in a different situation,” Jennifer said. “I was in a different time in my life… There are people in your life who are just supportive and who just look at you and they see who you are and he really saw who I was as a person more than anybody had ever done in my whole life. I think that’s for me when I sort of went, ‘Oh, wow!’ I knew he was funny, I knew he was special. I knew he was a really nice guy and decent person I just never really looked at him until a little while ago.”

The actress, who plays Melinda Gordon, a store owner who helps ghosts cross over on her CBS show, said the split with her former fiance was tough, but she was happy how things turned out in the end.

“It’s been really…look break-ups are awful. They’re really painful. They really hurt. They really suck on lots of levels but what I think is great about life is that the universe always brings you something really beautiful and great afterward and that’s kind of where I am now,” she said.
