Joe Manganiello Talks New Cutting Edge Fitness Book, True Blood & His ‘Real Life’ Magic Mike Documentary

“True Blood” star Joe Manganiello has a book due out this December – and he’s tackling the fitness genre.

“I always knew I was gonna write a book, I just never knew it was going to be this soon, or about that,” Joe told Access Hollywood when we asked him at Comic-Con about the December 3 due book, “Joe Manganiello’s Evolution: The Cutting Edge Guide to Breaking Down Mental Walls and Building the Body You’ve Always Wanted.”

Joe explained that his book will show people how he achieved his ripped physique for his HBO show and his film, “Magic Mike.”

“It’s all my workouts from ‘True Blood’ and ‘Magic Mike’ in one place and some [inspirational] mental philosophical stuff too,” he said.

The philosophical, Joe said, covers, “the mental part” of working out.

“That’s what keeps people from succeeding and meeting goals. It’s about clearing the road so that you can then have the body that you want,” he said.

Asked how he stays motivated during a workout and manages to make breakthroughs to even higher levels of fitness, Joe explained his philosophy.

“Just keeping motivated. I keep moving the finish line,” he said. “As soon as I know I’m gonna get close to that finish line, I’ll move it, so I’m constantly dangling that carrot further and further. And I get into all of that in the book. It’s a lot of the philosophy, the mentality of meeting your dreams.”

Joe’s show, “True Blood,” has been heating up the summer schedule on HBO and he also hinted to Access about what is ahead for the rest of the season.

“It’s like a pot with a lid on top and you can only hold it down for so long and that pressure is gonna blow that pot right off,” he said.

While Joe said he hasn’t seen a script for “Magic Mike 2,” he is staying in the genre in his next project. The actor is directing and producing a documentary he hopes to take to Sundance on “the real life ‘Magic Mike,’” he said.

Asked what he’s like as the boss, Joe said he brings the insight of an actor to the other side of the camera.

“I think there’s a lot of actors that become directors and I think there’s a reason for that… you know how to talk to your talent, you know what to expect of them,” he said. “It’s all storytelling to me. Coming from a classical training program, it’s about telling a story. I was trained to tell it as an actor. I’ve directed and produced stuff at every level, so it’s just another way of getting creativity out there and there’s more control and in that, there’s more freedom.”

“True Blood” airs Sunday nights at 9 PM on HBO.
