Former “Tudors” star Jonathan Rhys Meyers is set to play Dracula on NBC.
On Monday, NBC’s Chairman of Entertainment Bob Greenblatt told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer tour that the network had picked up the show, also called “Dracula,” to series.
The show is being described as a “provocative” version of Bram Stoker’s classic, set in 1896.
The series begins when Dracula arrives in London, pretending to be an American entrepreneur, who claims he is trying to bring modern science to Victorian society. His real goal is to enact revenge on people he believes have wronged him.
Dracula’s one problem with revenge occurs when he falls in love with a woman, who appears to be a reincarnation of his dead wife, according to NBC.
The show is based on a script by co-executive producer Cole Haddon.
Carnival Films, the studio behind PBS hit “Downton Abbey,” Flame Ventures, Playground, Sky Living and Universal Television will co-produce the show.
Production on the show, which has had an order for a 10-episode series, begins later this year.
