Josh Duhamel On Preparing For Fatherhood: ‘I’ll Learn As I Go’

As Josh Duhamel gets ready for the biggest role of this life – as a first-time father! – the actor admits he’s going into it without knowing all the answers… and that’s just fine with him.

“My mom and dad were great. They were young when they had me, so they were learning as they go. Just like I’ll learn as I go,” Josh told Access Hollywood during rehearsals for his upcoming gig as host of the 2013 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.

As far as all of the responsibilities that will come for Josh and wife Fergie with their new bundle of joy, Josh said he’s excited to get his hands dirty.

“I’m looking forward to every little thing – all of it,” he added. “I’m even looking forward to waking up at night and doing what everybody says you’re going to dread. I’ve heard all the horror stories and they can’t possibly be as bad as they say it is!”

When it comes to a name for their little tyke, Josh and Fergie have narrowed down the list, with the dad-to-be noting, “We have a number of names.”

So what are some of the choices?

“Yeah, like I’m going to tell you!” he laughed.

Josh and Fergie announced their pregnancy news in February with simultaneous posts on Twitter and the “Safe Haven” star said keeping the baby news a secret may have been the toughest part of all.

“That was probably the hardest thing for me. I wanted to shout it from the rooftops. But we had to keep it quiet for a long time and that’s just one of those things that you want to keep as private as you can,” Josh explained. “But at the same time, you’re so excited that you want to tell everybody. I want to tell every detail that I know, but the most important thing is that little baby, and keeping him – or her – as safe as possible.”

Catch Josh as host of the 2013 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on March 23.
