Justin Bieber: New Single ‘What Do You Mean’ Is About ‘Flip-Floppy’ Girls

Justin Bieber’s asking a question in his latest single that plenty of female fans are probably happy to answer.

“What Do You Mean,” set to drop Aug. 28, is about “girls” who “are often just flip-floppy,” the 21-year-old said of his upcoming track during an “On Air With Ryan Seacrest” segment on Wednesday.

“They say something and they mean something else,” he explained. “So … what do you mean? I don’t really know, that’s why I’m asking.”

Although the song isn’t out until nearly September, Justin described the musical vibe as “summery.”

“It’s really uplifting, clear, poppy, but cool,” he said.

The Canadian pop star might be writing about dating difficulties, but from the sounds of it, he hasn’t had much time for a social life. Justin told Ryan he’s been dedicating long hours toward the finishing touches on his first album in three years. Although the work has been difficult, he admitted, he’s hopeful the final product will ultimately be worth it.

“I’ve been working a lot in the studio, just trying to have a consistent sound, a cohesive sound,” Justin said, saying the opportunity to work with producers like Skrillex and Jason “Pooh Bear” Boyd has helped deepen his creativity.

“I get in my head a lot and I get kind of depressed because I want it to work so badly. I want people to love it. I want to inspire people,” Justin said, before discussing the sometimes paralyzing self-doubt he’s faced during the artistic process. “Sometimes I wonder, ‘Is this good enough? Is this the direction I want to go?’ I had kind of a rough week last week. I get in my head and I don’t want to get out of bed sometimes.”

In addition to his interview with Ryan, Justin also teased “What Do You Mean” with an Instagram post on Wednesday.
