Katharine McPhee: Moving On From Eating Disorder

NEW YORK (August 23, 2006) — Katharine McPhee, who struggled with bulimia for five years, says she’s not counting calories on the “American Idols Live” tour.

“My diet? Because I’m on tour, it’s not very healthy,” the most recent “American Idol” runner-up tells Us Weekly magazine in its latest issue, on newsstands Friday. “But I’m not controlling (about) my weight anymore, I don’t do any weird, disordered eating things anymore, thank God.”

In June, the 22-year-old McPhee revealed that she sought treatment for her bulimia last fall after successfully auditioning for the Fox talent contest. She enrolled in an eating-disorder center in Los Angeles and spent three months in therapy.

“I’m not working with a food coach anymore, but I do have people with whom I check in,” she told Us Weekly.

McPhee, who lost the “Idol” sing-off to Taylor Hicks, also addresses talk of her divalike behavior.

“I am a strong woman,” she tells the magazine. “But on ‘Idol,’ people were saying things like, `Oh, she’s stuck-up.’ … It’s hard because no matter what I do, there will always be people who don’t like me. I don’t think I’ve become less friendly because I was on one TV show.”
