Reality TV didn’t end well for “Newlyweds” Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, Carmen Electra and Dave Navaro, or Britney Spears and Kevin Federline — but Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian are confident their relationship will withstand the reality test.
“We don’t pay too much attention to it,” Lamar told Access Hollywood of past reality couple’s failures at a junket for his and Khloe’s new show, “Khloe & Lamar,” in LA on Thursday.
“You can say that about reality television show families [too], like the Gosselins or the Hogans — all these people, their families break up,” Khloe added. “This show has made [my family] closer and stronger, because it does make you spend time with each other, and also, this show is therapy to us.”
Khloe said that while recording every moment of their private lives has its drawbacks, the Kardashian clan uses their captured ugly moments as growth opportunities.
“We do film anything and everything — fights, DUI’s, births, everything we film,” Khloe told Access. “They are therapy. We do watch things and when we watch them we’re like, ‘Oooh — I hated how I treated you,’ or, ‘I hated how I said that,’ and you learn to mature and change yourself.
“So for us, the show has made us grow as people, and together,” she added. “And I pray that happens with our [new] show. If you do have cracks in your foundation, they will only get emphasized on TV, so if you can’t learn and grow from them then you’re going to have problems.”
The new couple, who tied the knot in September 2009, currently have a houseguest – Khloe’s younger brother, Rob — and Khloe said she’s none too happy to be living with family again after leaving the nest.
“Lamar’s the one who invited him to stay – I was like, not for it,” Khloe told Access. “I was like, ‘Absolutely not.’ He has whores over! He’s just like, a gross little kid.”
“He doesn’t have whores over?!” Lamar interjected.
“Yeah, that’s because he’s not allowed to have whores over, but trust me…,” Khloe added. “I don’t want a 24-year-old wild kid at my house when I’m a married girl with my husband and we just want our time. I don’t want these little skanks coming over.”
While fans of the Kardashians’ original reality show may often see patriarch Bruce Jenner being overruled by the family’s plentiful women (Kris, Kourtney, Kim, Kendall and Kylie), Lamar said he’s not worried about holding his own with the Kardashian women.
“That’s not a problem for me – I mean, I love it,” Lamar told Access. “I learn from them and I sit back and watch and me and Bruce are pretty close. I’ve learned a lot from him. Being an athlete, I get to learn and talk to one of the best athletes of all time. It’s pretty cool.”
The LA Laker also revealed he and Khloe are attempting to start a family of their own.
“We’re trying to have a baby,” Lamar told Access. “We’ll make it happen.”
“We’re trying and it’s fun,” Khloe smiled. “You never know…”
