Lenny Kravitz Talks Pre-Bonding With ‘Hunger Games’ Co-Star Jennifer Lawrence

Lenny Kravitz had a couple of advantages when he joined the cast of “The Hunger Games” – he didn’t have to audition, and he already knew series star, Jennifer Lawrence, who last year starred in “X-Men: First Class” with his daughter, Zoe Kravitz.

“They’re very close. They made ‘X-Men’ together, so I knew her from that experience,” Lenny told Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson. “She would come to the house and visit.”

Lenny said he spent time with Jennifer when she was hanging with Zoe.

“We just sort of cooked breakfast and [hung] out and laughed. She’s extremely funny,” Lenny continued. “She is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. She will make you laugh.”

And as for that lack of audition, Lenny said he was on a tropical island when director Gary Ross called, and told him he’d be perfect for Cinna, the stylist to Jennifer’s Katniss.

“I was in the Bahamas, he called, said, ‘There’s this thing called ‘Hunger Games.’ Do you know what it is?’ [I said], ‘No, I don’t,’” Lenny recounted.

Unfortunately, he was in a location that had patchy — at best — internet service. But he sought a connection out.

“I had to find some internet to download a book so I could read it in my trailer at night,” he said.

“[I] couldn’t put it down,” Lenny said. “And then I called Gary back and said, ‘Yeah! I’ll do it.’”

For those that haven’t read the books from Suzanne Collins, Lenny plays a stylist, who tries to help Catniss out when she enters the actual Hunger Games.

“Basically, when these tributes come to the capitol to participate in the Hunger Games, they’re all encouraged to take on a persona, have a look, so that people will like them because that can help save their lives, which people will realize when they see the movie, why,” Lenny explained.

“Cinna, who is my character, is the stylist for Catniss Everdeen, and he takes a real liking toward her, and he’s really invested in doing his best for her so that she will make an impression,” he added.

But it was Jennifer’s acting prowess that impressed Lenny himself.

“I thought she was perfect,” he said of the actress’ work in the film.

“The Hunger Games” opens March 23.
