Liam McIntyre Calls Spartacus: War Of The Damned ‘So Gutsy’

Spartacus and his band of rebels will face their greatest battle yet when “Spartacus: War of the Damned” returns to Starz next year, ushering in the era of Marcus Crassus and Julius Caesar.

“They’re some of the best actors, let’s just start there, because obviously it’s a hard act to follow with [characters] like Batiatus and Glaber and Lucretia as your kind of Hallmarks for this series,” Liam McIntyre told at Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego over the weekend. “These guys are the business. They’re some of the best actors. Crassus [played by Simon Merrells] is amazing and Todd Lassance — he’s gonna show you a Caesar you’ve never seen before.

“They cause troubles for the rebels, like huge… It hasn’t been seen,” Liam, who stars as rebel leader Spartacus, added. “It’s so gutsy. It’s like two chess masters fighting each other. It’s going to be an amazing battle.”

There’s been plenty of bloodshed in the “Spartacus” franchise over the years and as the show continues with its final season, Liam said there is a lot more of the red stuff coming.

“It hasn’t got any smaller, because we’re now fighting with 50,000 people instead of a couple of hundred, so it just gets harder,” he said.

The stunts in the show too will impress, Liam said.

“Oh man, the stunts are something else,” he told Access. “I know when I get back [to New Zealand, where the show is filmed] I’m going to be doing something that I’ve never done before, which is awesome… It’s this cool, big shot that I don’t want to ruin, but if they pull it off…

“In the offseason, I did gymnastics so I could be ready for the crazy physical maneuvering in my Spider-Man reinterpretation of Spartacus,” he added with a laugh.

As history buffs already know, the journey of Spartacus’ gang doesn’t end well, but Liam said fans can still expect some real twists and turns courtesy of creator Steven S. DeKnight.

“I’ve got like a kind of an abridged sort of thing [of how it turns out]. It doesn’t end amazingly for my character, but it’s the way it happens — he’s still working on it — but from what I’ve heard, it’s going to break some hearts,” he noted.
