Mark Cuban has explained why he’s out of the running as a bidder for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“It just didn’t work out. I wanted to buy a baseball team; they were selling a media rights deal,” the Dallas Mavericks owner and “Shark Tank” star told Access Hollywood Live’s Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Monday. “It just wasn’t going to work out.”
Mark, who was one of the less than a dozen parties in the running to buy the team, said he parted ways with the process over “economics” related to the television rights, above the team itself.
“The economics got so out of control because the Dodgers’ TV deal’s up for bid and so there’s a lot of groups coming in going, ‘This TV deal’s worth so much money that we’re gonna pay whatever it takes to get the Dodgers.’ And so they’re buying the TV rights deal first and the team second,” Mark said.
“There’s a lot of great people bidding on it. I just wasn’t going to go through that given all those circumstances,” he added.
Mark is currently starring as one of the investors – the Sharks – on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” thanks to his business acumen and hefty bank account, but being a billionaire is still something that makes him scratch his head.
“I wake up in the morning sometimes [thinking], ‘How did this happen to me?’ It’s just weird, because I haven’t really changed my life at all,” he said. “There’s a better chance I’m going to have a tuna fish sandwich at 7-Eleven than go out to some place fancy. It’s just not my style. But it freaks me out sometimes.”
Something that didn’t freak the business mogul out on an upcoming episode of “Shark Tank,” was Steve, an artist, who went to the Sharks asking for an investment in his business IWantToDrawACatForYou.com, where he charges people $9.95 to sketch a cat based on an idea from someone online.
“I saw a mad scientist, a mad genius, so I bought a third of his company and it’s making me money,” Mark said of the unusual idea.
When he’s not investing in unusual ideas, Mark is taking care of the Mavs, and he said he’s glad to have newcomer Lamar Odom on the team. And Khloe Kardashian, Lamar’s wife, is a great addition to the Mavs’ family.
“He’s a great player, we wanted him on the team, but now we have Khloe, Khloe’s part of the team, she’s there all the time,” he said. “She’s a cool chick. She doesn’t have all the drama. She’s really supportive of Lamar. I love talking to her.”
