Melissa Benoist Talks ‘Supergirl’ Transformation

Melissa Benoist is feeling pretty, well, super (groan), about her new show.

The “Glee” alum/”Supergirl” star is excited about bringing a strong female superhero to the small screen for CBS.

“It’s just high time. She speaks for hope and bravery and positivity and kindness, and shows that you can be strong without hurting people and without aggression and force,” Melissa told Access Hollywood at San Diego Comic-Con. “And I just think the message is so clear and pure.

Adding, “It’s time for something like that. Some clarity and some positivity.”

When she suited up as Superman’s cousin for the first time, the actress was overwhelmed by emotion.

“That’s a pretty indescribable feeling,” she said. “It’s hard to articulate, but it really feels like this, internal transformation, you know?

“I didn’t expect it, ’cause you’re just putting on tights, you’re putting on a leotard and a cape and whatever,” she continued. “But there’s something that really changes its strength.”

And she’s already adjusting her vocabulary to steer clear of “super,” due to her new role.

“It’s funny, ’cause I’ve used that word so much in my day to day life and now I just I feel so silly when I say it,” she said. “I’ll be like, ‘Oh, it’s SUPER cool,’ and then I’ll catch myself.”

“Supergirl” premieres Monday, October 26 at 8:30/7:30 PM on CBS.
