Neil Patrick Harris: ‘We’d Make Very Good Parents’

Neil Patrick Harris and longtime partner David Burtka made headlines recently when reports surfaced claiming the couple was about to adopt. The actor says they don’t have plans to be dads – just yet.

“We’d make very good parents,” the Emmys host and “How I Met Your Mother” star recently told New York Magazine.

Neil is now an out and proud gay actor in Hollywood – but the actor wasn’t always so candid with his personal life.

“I tried many different angles to head in a different direction. Dating different girls, being the funny, witty guy at the party, to avoid being the sexual being,” the 36-year-old, who publicly came out in 2006, told the mag. “I wasn’t thought of in a sexual way, which is easy when you have big ears and the neck and are called Doogie all the time. So I just never really contemplated physicalizing any kind of sexual ideas until much, much later.”

The actor, whose success in TV, movies and theater has flourished since coming out, credits David for helping to balance him. David, a leading Broadway actor himself (Edward Albee’s “The Goat: Or, Who Is Sylvia?” and “Gypsy”), is currently studying cooking.

“We yin and yang very well,” Neil said of David. “We’re both Geminis, but I, you can probably tell, I process what the options are, and figure out what to say, and he tends to just say what he is feeling. I’m just bowled over by him. He’s made my life exponentially more livable. He’s just—great. I’m his forever protector, and I’m happiest when he’s happy.”

Neil is set to host the 61st Annual Emmy Awards on Sunday September 20 on CBS. The new season of “How I Met Your Mother” premieres tonight on CBS.
