On The Download: Scissor Sisters Live At The Hollywood Palladium

Before Lady Gaga emerged from the NYC downtown performance art scene, there were the Scissor Sisters. Touring in support of their new album, “Night Work,” the Sisters swung by The Palladium in Hollywood for a night of raucous debauchery and fun.

There’s nothing quite like the sight of lead singer Jake Shears prancing around the stage, showcasing his beautiful falsetto voice in outrageous outfits which highlight his sexuality, appearing alongside female lead vocalist Ana Matronic — his on stage equal — herself equal parts Gaga, Grace Jones and Mika. A Scissor Sisters live experience is one big party and the audience is invited to take part in all of the dancing and fun. Now with a third full-length album under their belt, the band has a growing repertoire of material from which to select their live cuts.

Their current set list leads off with the fun title track from “Night Work,” before launching into the eerily fun murdered-beauty-technician song “Laura” from their debut album. Highlights of their new show include their powerful new anthem, “Fire With Fire,” and the always certain to get the audience on their feet “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’.” Jake takes a solo spotlight in “Skin Tight,” then parts way for Ana to showcase her new solo work, “Skin This Cat” – both of these fun new numbers offered up something new from Scissor Sisters tours of past.

The show’s three-song encore includes the band’s first ever hit, their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb,” electro-fantasy “Invisible Light” from the new album, and their ode to NYC drag prostitute fabulousness, “Filthy/Gorgeous.”

As I write this, I slightly fear the wrath of Ana, as she took a moment during the LA show to scold one reviewer who criticized their show rather harshly. No fears Ana, this reviewer couldn’t have emerged more pleased – your show left my crew smiling for days in remembrance and appreciation of all things glam which you offered up last Saturday night.

The Scissor Sisters tour continues tonight in Shears’ original hometown of Seattle, and tomorrow night in Vancouver, before heading back to Europe, where they remain exponentially more popular than on our own shores.
