Oprah Winfrey Reveals 1986 Oscars Wardrobe Malfunction; Shares Plans For More Acting

Oprah Winfrey hit the set of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Sunday night, where she revealed on her first trip to the Oscars in 1986, she had a wardrobe malfunction.

“When I went to the Oscars, it was one of the most horrible nights of my life,” the television legend said of her first visit to the Academy Awards, representing “The Color Purple,” in 1986.

Oprah revealed that the magical night was made very uncomfortable by an incident that happened with her dress after it was altered.

“I had used Dolly Parton’s dressmaker,” Oprah began, recounting her dress disaster story to Jimmy. “And he’d come over to [do] some fitting earlier in the day and then said, ‘I need to take it back.’

“When he brought it back, I didn’t try it on. So when I went to put it on half an hour before going to the Oscars, it didn’t fit,” Oprah continued. “I couldn’t get it up over my hips. So my hairdresser… had to lay me on the floor and push my butt down and zip and so I rode to the Oscars, really no exaggeration, planked in the back of a limousine.”

But her dress issues didn’t stop there.

“I couldn’t sit in the chair, I was like this the whole time,” she said, holding her body rigidly. “And I had this really heavy beaded collar, so when I sat back, the collar choked me, so I sat the whole night holding on to the collar. And I was praying for someone else to win… ‘Cause I knew I couldn’t get out of the chair.”

Oprah may be busy with the Oprah Winfrey Network, but when Jimmy asked if she wants to act now that she is free from doing a daily show, Oprah said she’s hoping to do more in the future.

“I think it’s something that I will pursue in the future. Yes, I will do that,” she said.

“Acting is the time where I feel the freest. I feel like I get to let go of myself,” she added. “I get to take on another character and it really does feel like a vacation for me.”

But while she’s no longer hosting “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” Oprah said she’s keeping up one of her missions from her show days – to get people to stop texting while driving. And she revealed to Jimmy, she even tried to stop someone from doing it on Sunday afternoon.

“Just today, I did. On the way to the Oscars, a guy was [texting], and I rolled down my window and I go, ‘What are you doing?’ And he did that,” she said, shaking her body. “And [he] dropped it and I thought, ‘Oh, I better stop doing that because now somebody’s going to have an accident and blame me for it.”
