‘Outlander’ Cast Raves Over Diana Gabaldon’s Cameo

Author Diana Gabaldon made her acting debut in Saturday night’s “Outlander,” and the cast loved watching her work alongside them.

Diana stepped into the shoes of Iona MacTavish, a lady who visited Castle Leoch for The Gathering, and had a moment with Mrs. Fitz.

“She was perfect,” Graham McTavish, who plays the imposing Dougal MacKenzie, told AccessHollywood.com. “She just stood there, did the line, knocked it out of the park. It was very, very, very well done.”

Lotte Verbeek (Geillis Duncan) explained that when they were shooting the scene, despite it being February in Scotland, the set was more than toasty.

“Diana did really well. I mean, that day on set was just hot,” Lotte said.

“It was hot for everyone because it was just a lot of people, a lot of fireplaces, action. … She was actually [standing] on the balcony, which is even hotter. She was just standing there as graceful as ever. She was a trooper,” Lotte added.

Caitriona Balfe (Claire Beauchamp Randall), who Diana said loaned her a fan to use between takes, enjoyed the exchange between Iona and Mrs. Fitz.

“She’s awesome. It was so great ’cause we also – Annette Badland, who plays Mrs. Fitz is so great. To see the two of them together in that scene was fantastic. And she looked incredible,” Caitriona said.

“It’s a wonderful episode, actually, and that moment in The Gathering, there’s actually a lot of small cameos,” Sam Heughan chimed in. “In fact… a lot of the crew are in that. … And I think Ron [D. Moore, ‘Outlander’s’ Executive Producer] is in there. There’s quite a few people.”

For Nell Hudson, who plays Mrs. Fitz’s granddaughter, Laoghaire, she said she had a blast being in a scene with Diana and Ron.

“It was so cool having her as one of the actual characters, like seeing her get into costume and Ron also got into costume. And it was so funny like, having them around in the hall,” Nell said. “I just kept trying not to catch their eyes, you know, just to not throw me out of character.”

“Outlander” continues Saturday at 9 PM on Starz.
