‘Parenthood’ Producer: Maura Tierney ‘Doing Really Good’

Maura Tierney is doing well in her fight against cancer, her former executive producer at upcoming NBC show “Parenthood,” told reporters on Sunday.

“She’s doing well… She’s doing really good,” Jason Katims, who is executive producing the show along with Ron Howard, told reporters at the Television Critics Association panel on Sunday in Pasadena. “She’s in treatment and I spoke to her a few weeks ago and she’s doing good.”

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, last September, an NBC rep announced that Maura would be exiting “Parenthood” as she continued to undergo treatment for breast cancer. Show production had previously been postponed to allow for the star’s medical evaluation. Lauren Graham, formerly of “Gilmore Girls,” was later cast in the role.

When asked about taking on a part previously held by another actress, Lauren said she was cast fast when Maura decided to step down over her health concerns.

“I never did see the original pilot. It all just happened really quickly… I knew what everybody knew about what was happening,” Lauren said, referring to Maura’s situation.

But Lauren said the material made stepping into the role easy, as did the cast, which includes former “Six Feet Under” star Peter Krause and Craig T. Nelson.

“It just was as simple as it was so moving, so simple [and] I was so impressed by the [caliber] of people involved,” Lauren said. “It was a very unusual situation, but everybody made me feel really nice.”

When asked, however, if any thought had been given to bringing Maura back in a guest role, Jason said they were focusing on getting the show to air.

“No, we’re at the point where we’re really just launching the show… We’re shooting the first couple of episodes,” he added.
