‘Push’ Author Sapphire Sells Second ‘Precious’ Novel

Could the acclaimed 2009 film “Precious” possibly spawn a sequel?

The New York Observer reports (via Publisher’s Marketplace) that Sapphire, the author of the original novel “Push,” which was adapted into the film “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire,” has sold a second book to Penguin Press to be published in Summer 2011.

The second novel is reportedly titled “The Kid” and follows the son of the main character from “Push.” In “The Kid,” the son, who has an artist’s soul, approaches manhood alone and abused.

The novel “Push” received an impressively high sales boost from the success of the movie, which was Academy Award nominated in several categories, including Best Picture, Best Director (Lee Daniels), Best Actress (Gabourey Sidibe) and Best Supporting Actress (for which Mo’Nique won the Oscar).

The author, Sapphire, is a New York poet who sold her first novel to Vintage at auction for $500,000 in 1995. She is also the author of three collections of poetry.
