Ricky Gervais Reveals His Golden Globes Secret Weapon: Booze

Ricky Gervais will make his return
to the Golden Globes stage, when he hosts the awards show for the fourth time
on Sunday.

Known for his no-filter barbs at
Hollywood’s elite, it turns out the comedian has a secret weapon behind his
awards show humor – booze.

“If I didn’t drink, I
wouldn’t be brave enough to say some of the things I’m going to say,”
Ricky told Ellen DeGeneres in a new interview airing on “The Ellen
DeGeneres Show” on Wednesday.

So just how early does he start
building up his liquid courage?

“Well it starts very early. I
probably have a little one,” Ricky added. “I start at a reasonable
hour, ya know, I’m not a maniac — three or four or something like that.”

As far as coming back as a
four-time host, Ricky revealed that it almost didn’t happen.

“At first, I really did say
no… I was editing one film I made this year and I was about to film another
one and I just thought, ‘I just haven’t got the time,’ but they said all the
right things. They said I could say what I want again,” he told Ellen.

As previously reported, one likely
target of Ricky’s jokes will likely be Mel Gibson, who was announced as Golden
Globes presenter earlier this week.

“I hope I haven’t offended anyone. It’s not my fault. I
like a drink as much as the next man — unless the next man is Mel
Gibson,” the comedian deadpanned when
introducing the actor during the 2010 broadcast, again making jokes when he
hosted the show in 2011 and 2012, as well.
