Rosie Defends Oprah: ‘I Don’t Think She’s Gay’

Oprah made news last week, reiterating to Barbara Walters that her relationship with best friend Gayle King is platonic. Now, Rosie O’Donnell is speaking out in support of her new boss.

“Anything that she says, I believe, is the truth,” Rosie told ABC News.

Rosie added that she thought Oprah was clever when she filmed herself and Gayle on their cross country road and camping trip.

“I thought she was really great on the road trip with Gayle when they were going into the camper and she said let’s spice up those lesbian rumors,” Rosie said. “And no, I don’t think she’s gay.”

But that wasn’t always Rosie’s point of view. Last year, Rosie speculated on Oprah and Gayle’s friendship during an interview with Howard Stern’s SIRIUS XM Satellite radio show.

“I don’t know. I think she’s never been married and she’s exceptionally close to Gayle,” Rosie told Howard back in October 2009. “I don’t know that she and Gayle are necessarily doing each other but I think they are the emotional equivalent of…”

“A gay couple,” Howard chimed in.

“When they did that road trip, that’s as gay as it gets,” Rosie said. “And I don’t mean it to be an insult either. I’m just saying, listen, if you ask me, that’s the couple.”

Further making her own point, however, Oprah tried to find Gayle a man in Australia, where she is currently filming several episodes of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

“I said to Gayle, because we just did this camping trip, and Gayle goes, ‘Maybe I’ll find a camping man.’ She needs an Aussie,” Oprah said. “I said, ‘What you need, is an Aussie man!’”
