Sarah Jessica Parker On Which ‘Sex And The City’ Character She Relates To & Movie Fashion Secrets

In less than two weeks, “Sex and The City 2” will hit theatres to the delight of fans around the world and there was no more fabulous way to interview Sarah Jessica Parker than in a carriage ride around Central Park.

Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush’s ride with SJP in the carriage may have celebrated her character, Carrie Bradshaw’s, favorite city – New York, but in “SATC2” the ladies travel all the way to Abu Dhabi. Filmed in Morocco over six weeks, Sarah Jessica said the experience was magical.

“This movie was a very special experience,” she told Billy. “It was the only and first time that the four of us have ever had the chance to live together. I can’t imagine having been there with anybody else and we came away from it even more close than we’ve ever been and knowing each other more and I think really loving each other in an entirely new way.”

They also got to know a lot about life abroad – including NYC’s carriage equivalent in the Middle East – a camel.

“I loved being on the camels. I loved it so much,” SJP laughed. “I think maybe I loved it more than anybody else.”

The trip to the Middle East in the film comes just as Carrie, the former ultimate single girl, is navigating life two years after marrying Mr. Big (AKA John James Prescott, played by Chris Noth).

“Carrie’s trying to figure out how she fits in as a traditional wife and those roles. In your own life, in what ways are you traditional?” Billy asked Sarah, who has been married to Matthew Broderick for 13 years, and with whom she has three children.

“I’m a very traditional person. I cook, I clean, I do laundry, I do my children’s diapers, I wipe vomit off the floor and all other sorts of things that can come out of small bodies and small children,” Sarah Jessica said. “It’s such an honor and I have always loved domesticity. I really, really have.”

Sarah Jessica was in her 30s when she started the series. Now 45, Billy asked who she identifies with most of the Fab Four – her character Carrie, Kim Cattrall’s Samantha, Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda or Kristin Davis’ Charlotte.

“There are things I definitely relate to Miranda and being conflicted about work sometimes and wanting to be all things to all people and missing out on certain things,” she said. “You know what, that’s like if you’re away and there’s a recital or a science fair and you don’t get back in time or your flight is delayed or it was never gonna happen. It’s a surprisingly awful feeling all day long, but I also think I’m a better parent because I’m a working person.”

As for Carrie and Big, children are not part of their plan, but two years after their City Hall nuptials, they have lost some of their “sparkle.” In her own life, SJP keeps the “sparkle” with Matthew by taking time to be a couple.

“We got to go out last night,” she told Billy. “That was nice.”

The “sparkle” and more broadly, the politics of marriage play an important part in the film as Carrie is tempted by her ex, Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), who she runs into, half way around the world.

The mere presence of an old love leads to all sorts of questions for Carrie and company in Abu Dhabi, as the story’s heroine has a real struggle of conscience.

“I really admire Carrie, and I would like to conduct myself in the same fashion,” Sarah Jessica told Billy of Carrie’s Middle East decisions regarding Aidan.

Fans will have to wait and see just how Carrie conducts herself, but Sarah Jessica did provide a full disclosure on the film’s fashions. The style does not disappoint, and there is a lot of it.

So how many costume changes are there?

“I think I have about 48,” she explained. “We started off with 60 and I think scenes were cut and scenes didn’t make it. So I think between scenes being cut prior to shooting and us not being able to find a good enough reason to change clothes on camera, which is what I would do if they would let me, I think we end up in high 40s.”

Her favorite is one that appears in new promos for the film.

“When Carrie runs into Aidan in the Souk and I’m wearing an old vintage J’Adore Dior T-shirt and the underpinnings of a Zac Posen dress,” she noted. “Not the dress itself, but rather the petticoat… and a pair of Manolos that were made for the movie.”
