‘Saturday Night Live’ Mocks Controversy Over 2005 Access Hollywood Archival Donald Trump Footage

“Saturday Night Live” has taken on Donald Trump’s latest controversy.

Alec Baldwin reprised his impersonation of the Republican presidential nominee for this weekend’s episode, appearing in the cold open opposite cast member Cecily Strong as CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin.

The show actually opened mocking the Tim Kaine and Mike Pence Vice Presidential debate. But, when the Pence character, played by Beck Bennett, said that Trump “respects women,” claiming, “he’s never said a single bad thing about women and I dare you to show me a single shred of evidence that proves otherwise,” “SNL” interrupted that sketch with a mock CNN breaking news piece.

“Well, looks like Donald Trump finally got what he wanted — a working microphone,” Cecily, as Brooke Baldwin, said in reference to audio of Donald Trump making lewd comments about women on an Access Hollywood bus in 2005, before the news sketch cut to Alec as Trump with a response.

“Are you not entertained?” Baldwin’s Trump character said as he sat in a near-identical background to the one in the GOP candidate’s video statement that was released late Friday night (in which Trump addressed his 2005 words and noted, “I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize”).

As the sketch continued, Cecily, as Brooke, then went on to address some of the remarks Trump was heard saying on the 2005 Access Hollywood tape. While she noted she couldn’t “quite” repeat his remarks on live television, Alec, as Trump, did. “Grab them by the p****,” he said.

“And I would like to take this time to formally apple-ogize,” he added, a word that confused Cecily’s Brooke character.

“Are you trying to say, ‘apologize’?” she asked.

“No, I would never do that,” Alec, as Trump, responded. “What I am doing is apple-ogizing to all the people who were offended by my statements. But more importantly, to the people who were turned on by them. I hear it’s really 50/50.”

After the interview ended, Cecily as Brooke was about to cut to another segment when the joke continued – this time, about a microphone still being on. The “SNL” split screen showed Cecily’s character reacting to a standing Alec as Trump making comments about how he wishes he was “that hurricane,” as he moved his hands, which were in frame, wildly. She quickly confronted him about the mic still being on, and he “apple-ogized” again.

The faux interview then cut to Emmy winner Kate McKinnon as Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the middle of a dance party with staff members (to Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration”), as they were “preparing for the debate tomorrow,” Kate’s Hillary character said.

After sending the partying staffers away, Kate’s Hillary told Cecily, as Brooke, that she found Trump’s 2005 comments “incredibly disturbing.” But she could only maintain her solemn tone for so long.

“It is a very, very sad day for our country and for all women. Minus one,” she said with a wink.

However, when asked her thoughts on whether Trump should withdraw from the race, Kate’s Clinton character was quick to encourage her opponent to stay the course.

“No, no, no, no, give him a shot!” she pleaded.

Later on in the show, “SNL” addressed the election again.

Former cast members Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon returned to the sketch series’ Weekend Update segment as a pair of undecided female voters, while host Lin-Manuel Miranda also weighed in on Trump’s election chances during his “Hamilton”-inspired monologue.

“Never gonna be President now,” he sang while passing by a photo of Trump backstage, borrowing a line from one of the hit musical’s songs.
