‘The 100’: EP Jason Rothenberg Teases Season 2 Finale ‘It Can Always Get Darker’

The battle isn’t over on “The 100.”

Last week’s parting shot may have seemed bleak as Clarke stood all alone in front of the sealed door to Mount Weather. Bellamy was still inside the facility and Octavia stood at the underground entrance. But, all is not lost. Or is it?

“The episode was designed to leave us at a low point across the board,” Executive Producer Jason Rothenberg told Access Hollywood. “Clarke is abandoned and betrayed and alone. She’s just lost her army essentially. There’s no way in that door that has been her obsession. She’s lost. It’s done. It’s over. Bellamy, on the inside, similarly, is left staring at the empty harvest chamber, all the cages are empty. His inside army is gone and of course, the 44 people that he had sent back there – his people – are gone. Octavia, also left facing a door, is abandoned and betrayed and everything she’d worked for [for] the entire season really — a place to belong — has been taken away from her, so it’s a low point for every character. It’s the ‘Empire Strikes Back,’ right?” he continued. “It’s always darkest before the dawn. Of course, in this show, it can always get darker, but that was the idea.”

If we’ve learned anything this season on “The 100” though, it’s that Eliza Taylor’s Clarke is the kind of character who will put herself in danger for others.

“What it is, is a moment where she’s gonna have to do it by herself – either it’s gonna be her or they’re all gonna die,” Rothenberg said of Clarke’s risky next move.

But, could Lexa’s betrayal have shaken Clarke to her core? Access asked Rothenberg if The Grounder leader’s betrayal in Part 1 of the Season 2 finale changed Clarke forever..

“I don’t think that being betrayed by Lexa in that moment is the thing ultimately that will stay with her permanently as a scar. I think that having to kill Finn certainly has changed her forever,” he said.

“Being betrayed by Lexa will certainly have ramifications,” he continued. “If in fact the battle is won, or if she survives it, she’ll definitely be able to understand where that decision came from. And it’s not like Lexa ever lied to her. Lexa said from Day 1, love is weakness; you have to rule; you have to lead not for your own sort of gain, I suppose, but you’re a representative of your people. You’re doing what you can – whatever you can — for them.”

Alycia Debnam Carey’s Lexa may have betrayed Clarke, but could there still be a romantic future for the two characters, provided they make it out of the Season 2 finale alive?

“Something would have to be overcome in order for that romance to continue, but… I do think Clarke will ultimately understand where that decision came from,” he said. “Whether she’ll be able to forgive her and feel romantically about her or not, obviously we’ll have to wait and see.”

“The 100” airs Wednesday at 9/8c on The CW.
