‘The Revenant’ Trailer Shows Leonardo DiCaprio In The Not-So-Great Outdoors

It’s man versus nature and then some in Leonardo DiCaprio’s newest film “The Revenant,” from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Inarritu.

Based upon author Michael Punke’s 2003 novel, the adventure thriller pits Leo against harsh elements as 19th century explorer Hugh Glass, whose fellow frontiersmen rob him and leave him for dead after a vicious bear attack in the remote Canadian wilderness. The first teaser trailer, released on Friday, displays the character’s desperate journey to not only survive, but wage vengeance against the men who wronged him.

“I ain’t afraid to die anymore,” Leo snarls in the clip. “I done it already.”

Shot in natural lighting and subzero weather conditions, “The Revenant” marks the first collaboration between Leo and the “Birdman” auteur. Renowned cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki depicts the arctic surroundings with appropriately chilling realism, and the trailer’s pulsing drum score will likely match viewers’ own pounding heartbeats.

Are fur pelts and a grizzled beard enough to give Leo his Oscar? From the looks of it, we’re just hoping they’re enough to keep him warm.

Co-starring Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson, “The Revenant” opens in limited release on Christmas Day and hits theaters nationwide on Jan. 8, 2016.
