Tom Hanks Reveals Type 2 Diabetes Diagnosis

Tom Hanks has come forward with a health problem that he’s had symptoms of for 20 years.

During his appearance on Monday’s “Late Show with David Letterman,” the 57-year-old actor, whose weight has fluctuated over the years for his roles on the big screen, explained that he’s dealt with high blood sugar levels for decades.

“I went to the doctors and they said, ‘You know those high blood sugar numbers you’ve been living with since you were 36, well you’ve graduated, you’ve got Type 2 Diabetes young man,’” the actor said.

The disease, which can often be controlled through diet and exercise, explained that accomplishing a dramatic weight loss is probably not possible.

“My doctor said, ‘Look, if you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school, you will essentially be completely healthy. You will not have Type 2 diabetes.’ And then I said to her, ‘Well, then, I’m gonna have Type 2 diabetes, because there is no way I can weigh as much as I did in high school,’” he told Dave.

The “Captain Phillips” star joked that in high school he weighed just 96 pounds.
