Unleash Your Style: Oscar Fashion Flashback

LOS ANGELES (February 2, 2007) — In this installment of Unleash Your Style, for the first time, an Oscar fashion show brings historical dresses back to life! We went on a fashion flashback with the show?s host ? a legend: Vogue?s Andre Leon Talley.

Barbra Streisand

?A breakthrough movie for Barbra a breakthrough outfit,? Leon Talley notes of this fashion flashback for the legendary singer.

Barbra Streisand?s outfit is considered demure by today?s standards but in 1969 when she won the Oscar for ?Funny Girl,? her style was scandalous ? wearing see-through material and pants, at a time when they were inappropriate formal wear for women.
Elizabeth Taylor

Liz Taylor was nothing short of an Idol in her signature diamonds and Edith Head designed dress, which complimented her most unique asset.

?She picked this periwinkle blue that reflected the lavender in her irises,? Leon Talley notes.
Cher

?[She?s] bold, brilliant, innovative,? Leon Talley affirms.

?People are so weirded out by this dress and I feel it?s quite appropriate,? Cher previously told Access Hollywood.

Not everyone was laughing in 1988. Cher caused controversy for ?sharing? too much of her body in an art deco Bob Mackie design. Cher?s outlandish dress overshadowed her Best Actress Award.

?This is Cher?s dress. She sent it to us. Strut it Lilly. Go Girl. Strut it,? Leon Talley says.

Sharon Stone

In 1996 Sharon Stone wasn?t feeling her Oscar dress so she grabbed a Gap T-Shirt, Armani coat and valentine skirt from her closet then plucked a gardenia from her garden and ran out to the red carpet.

?It?s thought out,? Leon Talley says. ?I?m gonna stab the lapel with a Gardenia and I?m gonna look like no one else,? he suggests she must have been thinking.

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts? first couture experience was in vintage Valentino when she won for Best Actress. Julia?s dress isn?t the easiest to walk in as this model can attest to.

?She went to Valentino for her first Couture gown, fitted in Beverly Hills,? Leon Talley recalled.

Other gowns revived at LA?s Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? Gwyneth Paltrow?s princess-cut Ralph Lauren and Halle Berry?s sweeping Elie Saab. Her stylist at the time tore off the sleeves to get it just right.
?They got to go out and make an effort that’s why you’ll see Jennifer Lopez getting a Chanel dress or you’ll see Nicole Kidman go to Dior they have to take it seriously,? Leon Talley said.
