Where Are They Now: ‘Survivor’ Ethan Zohn

As Access Hollywood’s “Reality Stars: Where Are They Now?” series continues, we bring you a “Survivor” million dollar winner who spent his cash prize, not on an expensive home or can, but to help those less fortunate.

“I’m not saying it’s for everyone,” said “Survivor: Africa” winner Ethan Zohn. “We all know the value of reality television. It’s the 15 minutes of fame, the flavor of the month. But I felt while I had this very lucky and unique opportunity, I wanted to do something with it.”

So with is million dollar prize, Ethan is helping change, if not save lives. The former professional soccer player took his winnings and started the non-profit “Grassroots Soccer” campaign.

“We train professional soccer players in Africa about HIV and AIDS then they go into the schools to teach the youth about AIDS prevention,” Ethan explained. “Soccer in the rest of the world is the most popular sport. So every little kid grows up wanting to be a professional league soccer player. You can imagine the effect when these pro players, their heroes and role models, walk into the classroom to deliver this important health message to kids. Their eyes pop out and their jaws drop.”

Ethan is also on the board of directors of New York Scores – a program for underprivileged kids in the five boroughs.

“It’s the skills they learn on the soccer field, teamwork and camaraderie, that they can bring back into the classroom,” Ethan told Access.

Besides the feeling of accomplishment, Ethan also took something very special away from his time on “Survivor” – his girlfriend of four years “Survivor: Amazon” winner Jenna Morasca. The couple met when they competed together on “Survivor: All Stars.”
