They reunited “Everybody Loves Raymond” co-stars Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton on the season premiere of “The Middle,” and now the bosses behind the ABC comedy have revealed an Oscar winner is heading to town – Whoopi Goldberg.
“She’s been a huge fan of the show,” showrunner DeAnna Heline told reporters on Tuesday at ABC’s portion of the Television Critics Association Session in Pasadena. “She has a special connection to [Eden Her’s character] Sue, so she’s gonna play Sue’s guidance counselor.”
At the panel, Steve Levitan, one of the bosses of “Modern Family,” also shared casting news, noting that a former Oscar nominee, Greg Kinnear, would create some drama for Ty Burrell’s Phil Dunphy.
“Greg Kinnear is going to play a business associate of Phil’s who kisses Claire (Julie Bowen) on the mouth. We have Ellen Barkin as… Phil’s rival real estate agent and Bobby Cannavale playing Louis from now defunct clown team Fizbo and Louis,” Steve told reporters.
But what Steve is most looking forward to has nothing to do with guest stars.
“The one I’m particularly proud of and excited about is next week, Lily says ‘F***,’” he smiled, referring to Cam and Mitchell’s infant daughter’s profanity outburst.
The “Suburgatory” showrunner Emily Kapneck confirmed Wilmer Valderrama was heading to the show starring Jeremy Sisto and Jane Levy, while Alicia Silverstone (Jeremy’s “Clueless” co-star) would also appear on the show for a four episode arc.
“Happy Endings” showrunners David Caspe and Jonathan Groff announced that Michael McKean will appear on next Wednesday’s episode, while Ed Begely Jr. will shortly be playing himself. Additionally, Megan Mullally is coming back as Casey Wilson’s mom, and “Lonestar” actor James Wolk will play Max’s boyfriend, beginning in the Valentine’s Day episode.
