Zooey Deschanel To Play Loretta Lynn On Broadway In Coal Miner’s Daughter

The “New Girl” is Broadway bound!

Zooey Deschanel is will star in a musical version of “Coal Miner’s Daughter” where she’ll play country legend Loretta Lynn.

Loretta announced the news on Thursday night on the stage of Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium during Opry Country Classics.

“I have a friend here tonight. I don’t know if ya’ll remember when Sissy Spacek was with me. I brought her out here with me. She about fainted. We both fainted,” Loretta said with a laugh, The Huffington Post reported. “She went on to do the `Coal Miner’s Daughter,’ and you know from there. Well, there’s a little girl backstage that’s going to do the play of ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ on Broadway,” Lynn continued. “Zooey, where you at honey?”

The “New Girl” star then took the stage, saying, “I’m going to help you sing. This is a great honor for me. This is my hero.”

The pair then sang “Coal Miner’s Daughter” together.

Dates for the Broadway musical have not been announced, but producers said it will not interfere with the actress’ FOX comedy.

“It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City. I never imagined I’d see ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see,” the country singer, 77, said in a statement.

The 32-year-old actress, who has been nominated for a Grammy and is one half of the band She & Him with M. Ward added, “Loretta Lynn and her music have been inspirations for me for as long as I can remember. She is a true legend and to be chosen to play such an iconic woman is a dream come true.”

Sissy Spacek portrayed Loretta in the 1980 movie version of the singer’s 1976 autobiography about growing up in Kentucky.

She went on to win the Oscar for Best Actress for the role.
