Reese Witherspoon & Ryan Phillippe Split

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe have called it quits.

“We are saddened to announce that Reese & Ryan have decided to formally separate. They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time,” a spokesperson for Witherspoon tells Access Hollywood.

Reese, 30, and Ryan, 32, met at Reese’s 21st birthday party in 1997 and began dating shortly thereafter.

In April 1998, the two began filming “Cruel Intentions.” They were married in June 1999 in Charleston, South Carolina.

The couple has two children – daughter Ava (age 7) and son Deacon (age 3).

In September 2005, a paparazzo assaulted two Disney California Adventure employees in an attempt to take photos of Reese and the kids while they were at the amusement park.

Reese’s film credits include “Just Like Heaven,” “Vanity Fair,” the “Legally Blonde” franchise and “Pleasantville.” She won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2006 for her role in “Walk The Line.”

Ryan’s film credits include “Flags of Our Fathers,” “Crash,” “Gosford Park” and “54.”

During the press junket for “Pleasantville” in 1998, Reese opened up to Access Hollywood about dating her-husband-to-be.

“I don’t know, all I can say is it’s great to be with Ryan. He understands me, he loves me, he’s passionate about what I do, he’s passionate about what he does and he understands me and I think that’s all you can ever ask for in a relationship,” she told Access.

Divorce papers have reportedly not been filed.
