‘The Vampire Diaries’ & ‘The Originals’: EPs Talk Impact Of Old Flames

It’s a big night for old flames on The CW on both “The
Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals.”

Stefan Salvatore and Klaus Mikaelson will both come face-to-face
with women who scarred their hearts.

For Stefan, in Mystic Falls, it’s Valerie, his first love,
an encounter Caroline encourages. When the two finally meet
again, there’s a lot at play. Valerie is holding a lot of cards here, and what
exactly she’ll tell Stefan – and whether she’s truthful or tells lies – will
make up a lot of the drama. But one thing’s for sure — she’ll shake up Stefan’s
world.

“Stefan learns a bombshell from his past as we start to understand even further the depths of Valerie’s resentment,” “TVD” Executive Producer Caroline Dries told reporters at a screening of this week’s “TVD” (and “The Originals”) on Wednesday.

As for Klaus over in New Orleans, he will come face-to-face with Aurora, the nobleman’s daughter he had a relationship with.

And she’s not as well-balanced as say, Klaus’ confidante Cami.

“She slaughtered a monastery full of monks, dove off a cliff, poisoned the one prognosticating witch who was the key to deciphering the prophecy and now she’s showing up to get into all kinds of trouble, assuming that Klaus will want to see her. Even though they broke up years ago, she’s kind of like the ex-girlfriend from hell,” Executive Producer Michael Narducci told Access Hollywood at the same screening.

Previews have revealed the two will see each other again, as well as flashbacks to their early days.

“We are going to play what the nature of their interaction is, but we’ve talked about it in the [writer’s] room as that person who you were once with, who — there was an insane chemistry. It did not work out in a very major way but like that great quote… relationships that do not end well, never end at all. So when they see each other, there’s a lot of sparks and fire and all that stuff and that’s what we’ll begin to see [on Thursday],” he added.

Beyond learning more about Klaus and Aurora’s past relationship, viewers can also expect more clarity in the show’s latest mystery related to who is playing games and pulling strings around the Mikaelson family.

“By the end of the episode, you’re going to have a sense of how that dynamic is shifting and maybe there are some people who we thought were at each other’s throats who might have some different motives, and there’ll kind of be a new landscape by the end of [Episode] 5,” Narducci said.

Over on “TVD,” though, clarity on those future-set scenes for the Mystic Falls gang will be a ways off.

“A while longer,” Dries said, when a reporter asked about when viewers will understand the flash-forward scenes better. “It won’t be confusing really, what that plot line is, but we want to actually make it feel like there’s something going on besides these little snippets — that you can actually follow a story if you were to splice it all together and lay it out linearly, that it would actually make sense into a little bit of a story at least.”

“The Vampire Diaries” airs Thursday at 8/7c, followed by “The Originals” at 9/8c.
