James Van Der Beek’s breakout role on “Dawson’s Creek” is a recurring punch line on his new show, “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt 23,” but series star Krysten Ritter has never laid eyes on her co-star’s teen series.
“I’m the only person in the entire world who has never see ‘Dawson’s Creek,’” the actress told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Monday’s Access Hollywood Live.
“You didn’t have a little crush on the Beek?” Billy asked, while Kit added, “You didn’t’ want to crawl through his window like Joey?”
“Those references are going right over my head, nothing!” she explained. “I was like 15 when that show was on. I was busy getting into my own trouble.”
The 30-year-old actress might be one of TV’s nastiest characters now (with a good heart buried somewhere in there!), but growing up, Krysten had to contend with a few B’s of her own along the way.
“I was totally picked on, but look at me now! I was definitely picked on by boys and girls. I was really lanky and skinny and the boys would say, ‘Turn sideways and stick out your tongue, you look like a zipper,’” she recalled. “I had big feet, I had really skinny ankles… Yeah it was pretty rough.”
The actress, who hails from Shickshinny, Pennsylvania, explained that her parents didn’t want her to pursue acting and had different plans for her career.
“My parents actually wanted me to join the service,” Krysten told Billy and Kit.
Catch Krysten on “Don’t Trust The B—- in Apt 23” – Wednesdays at 9:30/8:30c on ABC.
