Larry Birkhead’s father has died, Access Hollywood has learned.
Larry L. Birkhead died on Monday, his son confirmed to Access Hollywood.
He was 66.
“I [had] just spoke to my father who was looking forward to both Dannielynn and myself joining the family for the holidays. Unfortunately he passed away Monday,” Larry Birkhead told Access. “I am so thankful that he got to meet my daughter. He was extremely proud of my fight to know my daughter, and that gives me great comfort to know I made him proud one last time. I hope that everyone can respect our privacy in this most difficult time.”
According to Birkhead, his father had a recent knee replacement surgery. He was sent home with an oxygen tank, due to shortness of breath, and was scheduled to start rehab on his knee and lung this week.
However, he collapsed at his home and died after being rushed to the hospital, Birkhead added.
Prior to that, his father underwent surgery to remove cancer on part of his lung a few years before, but hadn’t experienced any problems since the operation, Birkhead told Access.
Despite sharing the same first name, the father and son did not use the Jr. and Sr. monikers because of different middle names.
