‘Same Love’ Couples Speak Out After Grammys Wedding

The Grammy Awards celebrated marriage equality during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ performance of “Same Love,” which also featured Madonna, Mary Lambert, Queen Latifah and two of the couples who got married live on television spoke to Access Hollywood about their televised nuptials.

Christine and Patricia Garcia, who first had a commitment ceremony a year-and-a-half ago, appeared on Access Hollywood Live on Monday, where they spoke about their one-of-a-kind wedding.

“We got to know most of the couples, it was a bonding experience, hearing all their stories,” Patricia said.

No surprise, the emotions were running high for the happy couples on Grammy night.

“We were all crying, having champagne,” Christine told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover. “They had a very limited amount of champagne and I think they did that on purpose.”

The newlyweds did not get to meet Madonna, but they were treated to Queen Latifah, who was very vocal about the historic moment.

“She was just yelling, ‘This is love, this is the way it’s supposed to be!’ She was amazing and she was beautiful,” Christine explained.

As for people who might not approve of their marriages, Patricia is hoping this moment opens their eyes to the similarities they share with every other couple.

“I say that it’s love and how could you not see the love between two people and not be happy about it? It’s love, we have the same hurdles as other couples do,” she added.

Access also spoke to Jason Miller and Yawar Charlie, another couple who got married during Sunday’s show, who had a brush with two music legends.

“We walk past Ringo Starr, he gives Jason a high five, [then] he gives me a high five, then Paul McCartney sticks out his hand and said, ‘Congratulations,’ and I stuck out my hand and for some reason. I didn’t let go for a second, then he grabbed Jason’s hand and the three of us were holding hands and I was like, ‘OMG!’” Yawar said.

“You accosted Paul McCartney!” Jason added with a laugh.
